Digital Tourism – Building Experience for Seichi

Being a part of a culture or subculture can be a fun and exciting thing. A subculture can be viewed or experienced by visiting a location physically or through virtual space. This thesis in is a subculture study designed to identify ways of creating a digital tourism experience. The author investigates the phenomenon of seichi junrei—Japanese word for pop-culture tourism, also referred to as anime pilgrimage–which is a favorite subculture activity among otaku fans. With the help of ethnography and fieldwork, the author of this thesis builds an understanding of seichi junrei, why it is interesting, and how it improves the community’s development through tourism.
